Surf City – Sustainable home expert Cathy Mails, founder of Sea Green Natural Cleaning Company, North Carolina’s only Certified Green Residential Cleaning Service, announces the release of her debut book, The Detox Dwelling, launching on November 18 on Amazon. This practical guide reveals how conventional household cleaners contain toxic chemicals that are harming families, pets, and the environment. Her book offers simple, affordable, and effective natural alternatives that truly work.
With 50 years of experience in the hospitality and cleaning industries, Mails combines firsthand professional knowledge with scientific research and medical insights to explain how everyday cleaning products are saturated with chemicals linked to skin irritation, respiratory issues, fertility problems, and even cancer.
“For years, I unknowingly used these products myself, assuming that if they were sold on store shelves, they must be safe, “said Mails. “But once I learned more about their ingredients and the harm they cause, I knew I could no longer justify using them in my own home, let alone my clients’ homes.”
Mails first started researching the products she was using to clean her house when her daughter was suffering from severe allergies at a young age. She learned more about the impact of dust mites and the various cleaners that were agitating her daughter’s and even her own health. This discovery sparked her passion for improving indoor air quality and ultimately led to sharing her findings with her customers and others by writing blogs and now, her book.
Over the years, Mails has developed extensive expertise in natural cleaning methods that create healthier, toxin-free living environments. Her mission is to educate families about the “dirty truths” behind conventional household cleaning products and to empower them with safe, effective alternatives.
The Detox Dwelling includes:
• A simple introduction to eco-friendly cleaning and how to make the switch
• Affordable DIY cleaning recipes using natural ingredients
• A room-by-room cleaning guide using safe, effective, eco-conscious methods
• Instructions on how to read product labels and identify harmful ingredients
“The commercial cleaning industry has done a phenomenal job of convincing us that if it smells fresh, it must be clean,” said Mails. “In reality, many of those chemicals remain in your indoor air, on your skin, and in your lungs, silently affecting your health over time.”
Mails emphasizes that her goal is not to attack major brands, but to raise awareness, offer safe alternatives, and help families clean smarter, not harsher. The book focuses on small, manageable changes that can dramatically reduce toxin exposure at home. Her long-term vision is to be a gamechanger by starting a movement to save people’s lives and the planet for future generations.
Purchase Cathy's book, Detox Dwelling, at the Chamber on Dec. 2, at 5:30 p.m. at the book signing event.
